James Malik
Assistant Director
Mr. Malik joined the Johnson Band program in 2020 as an Assistant Band Director leading the Symphonic Winds and Jazz Band. Mr. Malik previously served as the Head Band Director at Wallace Middle School for 11 years. Prior to his appointment at Wallace, he was the assistant director at Chapa Middle School, also in Hays CISD, and the Band Director at Navasota Junior High School in Navasota, TX. In 2017, the Wallace Band was recognized as a National Winner in the National Wind Band Honors Mark of Excellence project sponsored by the Foundation for Music Education, the only middle school program Hays CISD to ever receive this award. While at Wallace, Mr. Malik was nominated multiple times for the H-E-B Excellence in Education Award as well as the WMS Teacher of the Year. He has also received nominations for the Music & Arts Educator of the Year and the GRAMMY Music Educator Award.
Aside from his teaching duties, Mr. Malik also serves as Musical Director and Conductor of the Hill Country Community Band based in Wimberley, working with musicians of all ages to spread the joy of music to the surrounding area. As a saxophonist and woodwind specialist, Mr. Malik has had the opportunity to perform all over the world, most notably as soloist with the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra during their tour of England and Scotland.
Mr. Malik holds a Bachelor of Music from Stephen F. Austin State University and pursued a Master of Music in Conducting from the University of Oklahoma. He is a member of the Texas Music Educators Association, the Texas Bandmasters Association and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He resides in Wimberley with his wife Marisa, two amazing children Hannah and Jacob who keep him young, and three dogs that keep his floors covered in fur.
